Okay, we’ll sweep the sidewalk

The six-lane bridge that will replace the current three-lane Freedom Road bridge over the Turnpike next year includes a pedestrian sidewalk linked to sidewalks at either end of the span. But while responsibility for maintaining the bridge – which is a joint Turnpike-PennDOT project – belongs to the state, responsibility for maintaining the sidewalk has been accepted by the Township, whose insistence on including pedestrian accommodations was instrumental in the bridge’s final design. In a 21-page resolution, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors agreed at its April 27 meeting to accept responsibility for year-round maintenance of the bridge sidewalk, including snow removal and the application of anti-skid material, although under the agreement, the Township would be able to reassign that responsibility to adjacent property owners.
