[ARCHIVED] Chlorine is back, chloramines are out

Cranberry’s water supplier, the West View Water Authority, has notified the Township that they have made their seasonal switch in disinfectant from chloramines to free chlorine. The Authority will switch back to chloramines in the spring. The purpose of the seasonal switch is to satisfy EPA standards limiting byproducts of disinfection using free chlorine, which are higher during spring and summer. Chloramines produce less of the unwanted byproduct in warm weather, but don’t disinfect as well in cold water. Water treated with either form of disinfection is safe for all regular uses. But chlorine, like chloramines, must be removed from the water prior to dialysis treatment. Both forms of treatment can also be harmful to fish, amphibians and reptiles, so they need to be removed from water before using it in aquariums and ponds.
