[ARCHIVED] Sidewalk snow clearance is owners’ responsibility

There is considerable confusion in the minds of many residents and business owners about who is responsible for the care, repair and maintenance of sidewalks in front of their homes, offices and stores. As a consequence, people who are required to clear snow and to otherwise maintain those sidewalks are sometimes unaware of their responsibilities, with the result that sidewalks are occasionally left impassable for extended periods. However the Township’s sidewalk ordinance – which requires the property owner to clear the full width of those sidewalks within 24 hours of a snow event, is unambiguous, Township Manager Jerry Andree told Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors at their August 27 meeting. But to make certain that residents and business proprietors understand their responsibilities under the law, the Township will conduct an ‘educational blitz’ this fall to clarify those requirements and encourage compliance with their terms.
