The precarious state of public education in Pennsylvania threatens the Commonwealth’s long-term economic success, Cranberry Township Supervisor Richard Hadley told his colleagues at the Board’s October 2 meeting. While praising the outstanding work of Seneca Valley School District in serving Cranberry’s student population and in helping to attract companies like PPG Industries to set up shop in the Township, Hadley pointed to a state commission study which found that most of Pennsylvania’s school districts operate with insufficient funds and that the state’s formula for distributing support to its public schools was antiquated, unfair, and continues to shift the constitutional responsibility of the commonwealth to fund education down to the local level which translates to increased property taxes. He urged his fellow Board members to join him in demanding state elected officials and Governor to act on the commission’s on-going work and live up to the responsibilities articulated in the state’s constitution.
