[ARCHIVED] Police Honored for Going 'Above and Beyond'

Four Township Police Officers were honored for going above and beyond the call of duty earlier this year.

During Thursday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company Chief Michael Hanks, Assistant Chief John Pristas and Chief of Fire and Emergency Services Scott Garing recognized Police Sgt. Steve Berg, Officer Christopher Maloney, Officer Tiffani Shaffer, Officer James

Cipriani for their efforts during a kitchen fire on July 11.

According to Hanks, crews responding to the home on Cosette Drive were met at the door by an officer who quickly identified where the fire was located and how best to access it.

At the same time, three other officers were in the kitchen battling the blaze with fire extinguishers they carry in their vehicles. Fire crews, who were able to respond quickly thanks to the Company’s staffing program, were then able to extinguish the remaining fire.

“These officers went above and beyond the responsibility of their job,” Hanks said, noting fire doubles every minute. “Because of their actions, the fire was contained to the kitchen.”

Hanks added damage was kept to a minimum thanks to their efforts.

Berg, Maloney, Shaffer and Cipriani were given a certificate of appreciation and a fire challenge coin, which is bestowed upon a public safety officer who shows integrity, dedication, leadership and service above self.

It’s the most recent of many examples of the teamwork and collaboration used to keep Cranberry safe.
