Use of wireless communication technologies has been exploding along with the need for bandwidth, access, and the technologies to support them. Recently, they have included the introduction of mini-cellular transmitters, formally known as Distributed Antenna Systems, or DAS, to fill service gaps between the tower-based facilities that handle most of today’s voice and data traffic. Crown Castle Communications, a contractor working on mini-tower installations for Verizon Wireless, has plans to install several DAS units in Cranberry, so the Township has been working to update its regulations as they apply to wireless communication systems – both tall towers and minis, as well as those placed in and outside of public rights of way. Revisions are designed to assure public safety, protect community aesthetics, and provide improved telecommunication service. At its October 2 meeting, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors adopted the revised ordinance. For more information, contact Community Development Director Ron Henshaw at ron.henshaw@cranberrytownship.org.
