Cranberry’s Department of Community Development has issued permits to Crown Castle Communications to place nine new mini-broadband cell towers at various locations in the Township. The towers – actually normal-size utility poles formally referred to as Wireless Communication Facilities, or WCFs – will be installed in Township rights-of-way along Routes 19 and 228, as well as Peters and Mars Roads. Transponders are attached to the tops of the 32-foot poles, while steel-jacketed control boxes are placed at their base. Applications for the installation of additional poles, whose placement is regulated under a 2014 Township ordinance, are expected to be received over the coming months. WCFs are designed to augment the reception from primary cell towers in and around Cranberry while meeting the growing demand for wireless services.
