A Public Works request to contract RedZone Robotics for a $19,800 video inspection of Cranberry’s main sewer line, known as Interceptor One, was approved by Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors on September 23. RedZone, which is a spinoff of Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute, uses autonomous tractor-mounted video cameras, each about the size of a house cat, to examine dangerous and hard-to-reach places. Images are sent to the company’s Lawrenceville headquarters for processing and then used to determine which segments of the line require repairs. The company had previously used its technology to visually inspect other lines in Cranberry’s sanitary sewer system. The contract stipulates video inspection along approximately two miles of the old Interceptor One between Rochester Road and the Brush Creek treatment plant on Powell Road during October. Before the 2013 construction of a second parallel interceptor, it had not been practical to shut off the flow of sewage in order to allow inspection of the pipeline.
