Today’s plush doggie spa is not your grandfather’s kennel, so it shouldn’t be treated like one. At its May 26 meeting, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors entertained public comments on how changes in the ways kennels operate should impact their placement. Instead of old-style, largely outdoor kennels with nonstop barking, today’s pampered pet accommodations are primarily indoors, so their separation from one another and from residential neighborhoods could be less than the half mile previously required without creating a public nuisance. At the same time, comments regarding a change upgrading the status of Rt. 228 from a rural road into a major highway – a change that carries consequences for locating certain businesses – were heard, and the definition of an event center joined the current definition of convention center; a distinction which the code had not previously made.
