[ARCHIVED] Emergency declaration can temporarily override plow driver limits

Heavy truck operators with Commercial Drivers Licenses have been told by PennDOT that they cannot drive for more than 11 hours in any given day. Normally, that’s not a problem for Cranberry Public Works employees who have CDLs. But when those drivers are needed to clear roads blocked by severe winter storms, eleven hours may not be enough. Last winter, for example, drivers operated for as long as 16 hours a day to open the roads. However, there is an exception: if a local state of emergency is declared, the limit can be lifted from 11 to 15 hours. At their January 27 meeting, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors ratified temporary emergency declarations for the purpose of enabling Township employees with CDLs to exceed the 11 hour cap.
