The task of correcting errors, omissions and persistent misidentification of Cranberry landmarks on popular electronic locator maps has fallen to the Township’s information technology department. At its March 6 meeting, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors learned why mapping services including Google, Bing and others often label the Township as Fernway or Fox Run – Cranberry neighborhoods whose boundaries don’t actually correspond to those shown on their maps. The reason, according to GIS Administrator Doug Cloutier, is that the Census Bureau, whose data is frequently used by map publishers as a basis for developing their own maps, had established various Census Designated Places – unincorporated geographic areas which were named for nearby landmarks. Fernway and Fox Run were among them. But, following extensive discussions with Census Bureau staff, those names were removed from the Bureau’s database. Over time, as map publishers update their products using Census Bureau data, those designations may go away as well. For more information, contact doug.cloutier@cranberrytownship.org.
