[ARCHIVED] County District Attorney lauds drug collection program

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger, together with Pennsylvania’s Deputy Secretary of Drug and Alcohol Programs and the Executive Director of the Staunton Farms Foundation – a private foundation which funds various behavioral health programs – held a press conference hosted by the Cranberry Township Police Department on April 29. The group’s message was that prescription drug abuse is on the rise in Pennsylvania and that the voluntary collection of unused, unneeded, and expired drugs for incineration, which is being facilitated by MedReturn boxes in seven Butler County locations, is helping to get potentially dangerous medicines outside the reach of potential abusers and away from the natural environment. A self-service box installed in the lobby of the Cranberry Township Police Department earlier this year has been a particularly successful drug collection site, Goldinger pointed out. Prescription drug abuse is the most frequent precursor to heroin addiction.
