PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch today announced two grants totaling $1.5 million to support the design and engineering for several long-planned improvements to Rt. 228 in Cranberry Township. The grants, which will bring the anticipated $5.8 million project package into shovel-ready form, includes the addition of a new mile-long eastbound lane along 228 from the I-79 northbound off ramp up to Franklin Road, along with an underpass which will carry traffic exiting the Interstate as well as from Cranberry Woods directly across to the fast-developing north side of 228, including the new Lemieux UPMC-Penguins training facility. The project is supported by a three-way partnership between the Township, PennDOT, and Cranberry Springs. Cranberry’s 228 corridor is currently the workplace of approximately 8,000 employees; the expansion will enable another 2,500 to be housed there.
