The signal will be activated Wednesday night at the heavily-travelled intersection of Route 19/Route 228/Freedom Road. The intersection has been upgraded to include dual lefts, dual through lanes, and a right turn lane in each direction. This will enable the traffic light’s timing to allow concurrent eastbound and westbound movement on Freedom Road and Route 228.
Weather permitting; the new signal will be fully operational beginning at 6:00 AM Thursday, December 11. Dual left turns for both eastbound and westbound traffic will occur simultaneously on Route 228 and Freedom Road, followed by through movements in both directions.
The $3.6 million improvement project, which is designed to make the intersection operate more efficiently, is being managed by PennDOT. Cranberry Township secured funding for this project through the Federal Congestion Mitigation/Air Quality (CMAQ) program, managed locally by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission.
Cranberry, widely recognized as one of Pennsylvania's fastest-growing communities, plans to continue partnering with PennDOT in the management of its transportation systems.
