Cranberry Township’s use of social media to keep local residents informed was awarded First Place in an annual Township Citizen Communication Contest held by the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors. Cranberry actively maintains a presence in Facebook for its community news, safety alerts, recreation-related announcements, business information, and golf course communications. It also makes extensive use of Twitter for breaking news and more, as well as YouTube, where it has a channel that includes a number of Township-produced videos. Cranberry is currently at work developing a presence on other social media platforms including LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Google+. All contest entries were judged on the usefulness of information presented and how well that information was communicated, as well as their overall attractiveness and readability. The Association represents Pennsylvania’s 1,454 townships of the second class, home to 5.5 million residents.
