A new generation of cellular network technology, known as Distributed Antenna Systems, or DAS, is gaining a foothold in Cranberry. Featuring much smaller transmitters the familiar tall towers, the new network is being built out along public rights of way in the Township. At its February 26 meeting Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors approved an agreement with Crown Castle Communications to locate three of its new poles in sections of Mars Road, Wisconsin Avenue, and Peters Road under the terms of a revised ordinance adopted last year. The technology designed to conform more closely to the irregular terrain of places like Southwestern Pennsylvania and to use less power than current tall towers require.
