ARLE – the Automated Red Light Enforcement program in Philadelphia – uses cameras to capture the license plate numbers on cars that blow through stop lights. The system then generates and mails out notifications of fines which the car’s owner is then obliged to pay. Under a state-sanctioned program, funds generated by the program are used to help finance traffic improvement projects in communities throughout the Commonwealth. One such project is a roundabout proposed at the intersection of North Boundary and Marshall roads in Cranberry. At its June 23 meeting, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors authorized an agreement with PennDOT to accept funds from the program.
