Cranberry Township has been awarded Platinum Certification for its sustainability practices by the Pennsylvania Municipal League and Sustainable Pittsburgh. The Platinum Certificate, one of only two issued statewide, follows an assessment tracking 131 policies and practices that define a sustainable community. Cranberry had previously earned Gold Certification through the program. The Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification program was originally created for municipalities in Southwestern Pennsylvania by Sustainable Pittsburgh, a Pittsburgh-based advocacy and consulting organization. It has since gone statewide, in tandem with the nonprofit Pennsylvania Municipality League, to recognize small, medium, and large municipalities. Among the areas cited in the award were community design and land use, energy efficiency, health and wellness, intergovernmental cooperation, recycling and waste reduction, fiscal controls, internal management and operations.
