[ARCHIVED] Proposed changes affect kennels, convention centers, highways

Today’s plush doggie spa is not your grandfather’s kennel, so it shouldn’t be treated like one. At its April 28 meeting, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors authorized a public hearing on May 26 to consider how changes in the ways kennels operate should impact their placement. Instead of old-style, largely outdoor kennels with nonstop barking, the newer pampered pet accommodations are primarily indoors, so their separation from one another and from residential neighborhoods could be less than the half mile previously required without creating a public nuisance. At the same May 26 hearing, a change in status for Rt. 228 from a rural road to a major highway – a change that carries consequences for locating certain businesses – will be considered, and the definition of an event center will join the current definition of convention center; a distinction which the code had not previously made.
