[ARCHIVED] Cranberry’s Collection Connection is picking up

The details of waste collection programs differ from one community to another, so educating new residents on how Cranberry’s Collection Connection program works is an ongoing effort.  That program, initially formed 13 years ago in response to Pennsylvania Act 101, includes a number of components.  At its March 2 meeting, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors received an update on the program from Environmental Project Coordinator Lorin Meeder.  Since the program began, Cranberry’s population has grown significantly, but the volume of waste landfilled has actually declined, he said.  Instead, the amount of material recycled has more than quadrupled, making Cranberry’s rate of solid waste diversion from landfills one of the state’s highest.  A series of special collections for hazardous, bulky and yard wastes, supported by one-on-one customer service, are also key elements of the program.  An upcoming reauthorization of Act 101 is expected to change the law’s provisions including its funding formulas and enforcement.  For more information, contact Director of Engineering Jason Kratsas at Jason.kratsas@cranberrytownship.org
