An ambitious program of physical fitness, which has since been identified as a national model, was formulated and put into place for the Cranberry Police Department last December. Built around a series of objectives tailored to each officer’s age and gender, the voluntary program offers incentives, including paid time off, for participants who reach their goals. Earlier this month, the first assessment of results was carried out. The program, called Elite Police FIT, is designed to lower stress, increase stamina, improve effectiveness and reduce injury among officers. At its April 27 meeting, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors honored a dozen Township officers who had gone through the program’s initial assessment – a demanding series of timed events including runs, sprints, bench press, leg presses, pushups and sit-ups. A possible expansion of the program to other Township employees is under consideration.
