[ARCHIVED] Blight takes flight

Poor property maintenance can become more than an eyesore. It can also create health and fire hazards and impact surrounding property values. At its October 5 meeting, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors agreed to advertise the proposed ordinance for consideration at its November 2 meeting. The ordinance would offer a more comprehensive, more detailed and more enforceable maintenance code than the Township’s current 2002 version. It would also include protecting pedestrian connections, advancing stormwater discharge requirements, and reduce demands on fire services. Public comments on the ordinance, which is based on the International Property Maintenance Code, will be accepted at the Board’s October 26 meeting. Under its provisions, when properties are in a state of disrepair, particularly when they could jeopardize public safety, the new code would require owners to take corrective action. In those cases, however, Township staff would work with property owners to find solutions and provide alternatives wherever possible.
