Pity the poor self-storage operators. Nobody wants them. Under current law, they’re limited to Light Industrial zones, of which there are only two in Cranberry. But on December 14, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors authorized a January 25 hearing on whether to expand the placement of self-storage units to include the Transitional Light Industrial zone, or TLI, on Progress Avenue. One of the earlier sticking points with siting self-storage companies was that their architecture – typically long single-story buildings with a row of garage doors along one side – was not a particularly welcome sight in most zoning districts. But lately, their designs have evolved into office-type structures which are more compatible with neighboring buildings and are capable of eventually being re-purposed. To accommodate that change, the Board will consider an amendment adding “mini-warehouse” to the permitted uses in the TLI district.
