An attorney representing Supersale Corporation, owner of the Giant Eagle franchise in Cranberry, presented his client’s petition to transfer a liquor license from a licensee in Chicora at a hearing before the Township’s Board of Supervisors at its January 27 meeting. If approved, the store, which has operated at its Cranberry Mall location in Cranberry since 1988, would become one of approximately 75 supermarkets in Pennsylvania currently licensed to sell beer in their restaurant areas. The store’s proposed approach to beer sales would involve expanding café seating from 60 to 71 and constructing a fence within the store to more clearly separate the café from the remaining areas of the store. Beer could be consumed on the premises, but only if the patron also orders food, and even then, with a two-beer limit. Although the store is open for business 24/7, its café would only sell beer between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM. All patrons would be required to produce a photo ID in order to purchase beer, and no single purchase could exceed the equivalent of two six-packs. The Board will consider approval of the transfer request at its February 3 meeting.
