The five kilometer run/walk event formerly known as the “Chamber Chase 5k for Scholarship Funds” will operate this year as the “Run for your Library 5k” under the joint sponsorship of Friends of the Library, Cranberry Lions, and The Chamber of Commerce. The change was prompted by the recent funding difficulties being experienced by public libraries throughout the state, according to CTCC Board member Dan Storrs, who explained the transformation to Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors at its May 26 meeting. State funding of libraries has decreased more than 35 percent over the past two years.
Every public library is eligible to participate in the event; runner proceeds will benefit the library of their choice. $250 will be donated to the chosen library on behalf of the winner. There is a $20 registration fee for participation. Participants also receive a free Lion’s Pancake breakfast immediately after the race, a six-month membership in Cranberry Friends of the Library, a commemorative tee shirt, and discount certificates.
A one-mile fun run will also be held that same morning for a $10 registration fee.
