Over its 12 years of operation, the Cranberry CUP softball tournament has grown to include a series of related fund-raising and community-building activities which, by the end of last year, had generated $836,000 to support needy families and causes. This year, Cranberry CUP founder Cathy Cortazzo told the Board of Supervisors on June 30, that total is expected to exceed $1 million. A significant part of the organization’s financial success has come from parallel activities by sponsoring organizations whose fund-raising projects have generated thousands of dollars for distribution by Cranberry CUP. In addition to providing financial support for a specific family facing serious difficulties, Cranberry CUP’s funds now extend to scholarships and Christmastime assistance. However, starting 2012, the Cranberry CUP will also become a major contributor to the CTCC Community Project of the Year – a replacement for the wooden Playtime Palace structure in Community Park, Cortazzo reported. Registration for the different Cranberry CUP events will be done entirely on line this year.
